KOVÁCS LOLA

Nature, the universe, human beings, blood, flowers and many other things appear in my pieces as mystical events. Organic forms are given extra life, and dead or artificial things seem to be filled with energy and will. Myths, elements of spiritual tradition, organic forms, moments of culture history fill the cognitive dimensions.
I have spent endless years studying the techniques of painting and the ways of creating a picture and I am still learning. I love the touch of the canvas and the smell of paint. I deeply respect craftsmanship and enjoy every brushstroke. Yet I think there are many channels - an physical form an idea wishes to take the artist has to try and make it happen. So I try.
My recent works are about transparency, as a picture takes form in thin air. In my paintings I use several layers of clear plexi glass put behind each other. The semi-transparent paint layers create an optical colour mix. As the "canvas" is transparent, there is no background, the actual setting serves as background so my picture never shows the same face. I like to install them hanging in space so that both sides can be seen and seen through. Besides painting I use the feminine technique of embroidery and weaving which have an exceptionally rich tradition in Hungarian folk art. I use transparent fishing line with wich I try to create pieces that seemingly consist of almost nothing. The cast shadow of them looks like line drawing on the wall.
Milk is still sold in plastic bags in Hungary - as a child I had been fascinated by this, and I still wonder… liquid stored in plastic bags! So I decided to make something entirely different using these bags so I cut them into stripes, fixed them into longer ones and built a headdress. Each stripe is fixed onto the ceiling so the whole piece hangs in the air. I have exhibited this piece in Budapest in 2011, and as a performance I wore the headdress at the opening.
